My childhood fostered imagination, whimsy and endless exploration into all things creative. Clay, cloth, wood and especially paper and paint often occupied my small enthusiastic hands- When I wasn’t ardently involved in some project I was reading.
As a teenager in art school and for years after I lived a bohemian painter’s life in San Francisco. In love with golden light before dusk, the lush, invitational expanses of Golden Gate Park’s landscapes, the very veins on leaves I was avid to capture all that on paper and canvas…
It is heady and singularly challenging to be an artist- I’m profoundly grateful for my calling.
ARTISTS STATEMENT
There are no premeditated verbal constructs such as lyrical odes to nature, or political/environmental agendas when I begin a new piece.
The interpretation, once more, comes from the work itself: color schemes may be psychologically impacting, shapes can reveal themselves as symbols fraught with meaning, and history sometimes rises up, speaking through a composition, leaving me awestruck.
When I struggle for an accompanying “story”-for the work is mute at times- I don’t force the words for perhaps there are none: the viewer is left to take in the painting or print without verbal influence, possibly deriving deeper personal meaning.
I live for the ecstasy of creating: what a sublime pleasure it is to create beauty. Ever bountiful nature offers up lyrical arrangements of color and shape that I, at best, can only emulate.
When a viewer exclaims joyfully over one of my pieces I am fulfilled.
